SUMMARY:Knowledge Brokering through Curriculum Co-Design: Lessons from Justice-Centered Computing Education
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this engaging knowledge cafe with F. Megumi Kivuva to explore practical co-design and knowledge brokering routines\, examined through their work with curriculum co-design for justice-centered computing education (JCCE). Guided by bell hooks’ notion of praxis\, this knowledge cafe focuses on how Megumi teaches and shares research with practitioners to support their teaching through curriculum co-design for justice-centered computing education (JCCE). By examining the collaborative processes used to design and adapt curricula that foreground computing’s social-political implications within the constraints of informal learning environments\, Megumi will highlight the relationship work behind the design\, including issues of trust\, role navigation\, and the creation of boundary objects. Key challenges encountered in the process will be discussed along with the design choices used to navigate these challenges.  \nRegister Today! \nAbout Megumi: I am a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Washington\, Seattle\, advised by Prof. Amy Ko. My PhD research aims to co-design computing education pathways for refugee youth\, their families\, and the community organizations that support them. Through community-participatory methodologies\, I work closely with refugee support organizations to develop computing education programs for refugee youth. My previous work includes CS integration in language learning\, co-construction in CS classes\, computational embroidery and e-textiles\, and teaching computing in various after-school settings. I hold a BA in Computer Science and Spanish Studies from Bard College.
